Howard is famed for his traditional and timeless landscapes featuring snow-capped mountains,
sparkling rivers and native forests. Howard succeeds in capturing the atmospheric light and colours
of Scotland , and in particular, Royal Deeside as only an artist painting outdoors can. His style of
“emotional realism” conveys the sense of being in a particular place at a particular moment in time.
Mary, on the other hand, is acclaimed for her night scenes of Aberdeen, which often focus on an
element of mystery or intrigue within the scene for the viewer to play out a story. Well known
streets and buildings illuminated by bright and colourful city lighting are captured in her distinctive
style “where the musicality of light can be observed within a brief pause”.

Situated in Aberdeenshire on the South Deeside Road (B976) halfway between Banchory and
Aboyne near Kincardine O’Neil “the oldest village on Royal Deeside”. (Two miles from the Potarch
Hotel.)
Formerly the old village shop and post office, complete with old petrol pump and red telephone box,
The Butterworth Gallery is run by Howard’s eldest daughter, Sarah, who will be delighted to
welcome you into this bright, spacious and informal gallery hosting a continually changing display of
original artwork and prints by Howard Butterworth and his daughter Mary Louise.
