Now in its 24th year, The Sunday Times Watercolour Competition, supported by Smith &
Williamson, is the largest watercolour competition in the UK. An exhibition of approximately
100 works will be on display from 12-18 September 2011 at the Mall Galleries, London.
The exhibition continues with the Smith & Williamson Tour to venues throughout the UK.
The Sunday Times Watercolour Competition is one of the only remaining prizes to celebrate
the diversity and beauty of the undervalued medium of watercolour. The competition
celebrates all works produced in water-based mediums, whether they are abstract, figurative
or landscape. The 2011 judges include: Anthony Green, Artist; Penny Johnson CBE ,
Director, Government Art Collection; Desmond Shawe-Taylor CVO, Surveyor of the Queen’s
Pictures; Dr Kim Sloan, Curator, Department of Prints and Drawings, British Museum; Frank
Whitford, Critic and Writer, Sunday Times.
A total of £18,000 will be awarded to artists who demonstrate a high level of skill and
creativity. Prizes include: 1st Prize (£10,000), 2nd Prize (£6,000), the Smith & Williamson
Cityscape Prize (£1,500), and the Vintage Classics Prize for Cover Art (£500 and a
commission to create the cover art for a Vintage Classics). The prizes will be awarded at a
private awards ceremony on 14th September 2011.
Exhibition Information
An exhibition of approximately 100 works will be held from 12-18 September 2011 at the
