Southern Spinal Injuries Trust
SSIT supports the Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre in Salisbury and
people living with a spinal cord injury in the South and South-West of England.
Monies donated from the 2011 Bloomsbury Art Fair are currently being used to
build a pioneering rehabilitation garden in the grounds of the Spinal Treatment
Centre. Horatio’s Garden will be an integral part of patients’ rehabilitation
programme and will include space for creative arts, recreation and quiet retreat.
Funds raised during the 2012 Art Fair will enable SSIT to continue its work which will include further
development of Horatio’s Garden. www.ssit.org.uk
Motivation
According to the World Health Organization, the average life expectancy of a
paraplegic living in a developing country is 2-3 years and there are 20 million
people in the world who need a wheelchair and don’t have one. Motivation
specially design wheelchairs that can cope with these challenging environments and provide training in
vocational skills and income generation for disabled people to enable them to provide for themselves and their
families. www.motivation.org.uk
Walking With The Wounded
During the course of military operations, many young men and women suffer
horrific injuries. When the wounded return home they face a very different
future to the one they had planned, with challenges they never imagined. This is
the future that Walking With The Wounded is supporting. The funds raised
finance new qualifications, courses and further education for people who are
seriously injured. It enables the blind, the burn victims, the mentally injured,
the amputees and all the other wounded to rebuild their lives and to return to the work place. In 2011, a team
of injured servicemen completed an unsupported expedition to the North Pole and this year they have
attempted to climb Mount Everest. www.walkingwiththewounded.org.uk
