Four exciting exhibitions exploring themes of fashion, design, Modernism and the
natural world, all with a vintage twist:
Sixty works by more than twenty major fashion photographers of the 20th Century
in Selling Dreams; a journey through the history of Penguin publishing in Penguin
Parade; Eric Ravilious’s relationship with the social, cultural and geological landscape
of Britain in Going Modern / Being British; and 50 years of artistic practice including
colour woodcuts, lithographs and previously unseen watercolours by Peter Reddick
RWA in Beautiful World.
The Royal West of England Academy, Bristol, is open seven days a week.

Associated events March – April 2012
The events programme explores the relationship between photography, illustration,
book design and printmaking in the 1930s, tying together all four exhibitions
showing in March and April 2012. Unless otherwise stated, tickets are available by

Dr Katherine Hann, Penguin Project Curator, will talk about the creation of the
exhibition and the choice of material on display
COOK THE BOOKS: Hands-on sessions inspired by the culture-changing Penguin
cookery books, and led by Shannon Smith, an experienced food and cooking tutor.
Menus are based on local, seasonal produce, and use simple methods and everyday
equipment.
Good things – Jane Grigson and the British food renaissance
Wednesday 21 March 6.30 – 8.30pm, Cost £15 (including daytime entry to
exhibition). Pre-booking essential – maximum 16 places
Watch and taste a menu drawing on the life work of this warm and witty champion
of regional food and local produce. Grigson’s fresh approach brings out the pleasure
of cooking and eating the ingredients of early spring, and celebrates the best of
British.
Get the Point of Dry Point: Ros Ford MA
Saturday 24 March, 10am – 4pm, £70
Get inspired by the exhibition before sketching outdoors directly onto the
contemporary medium of plastic drypoint – a fantastic, easy and immediate way to
beautiful prints. No experience of printmaking needed. Using environmentally
friendly inks. Bring a sketchbook.
Ravilious: An Illustrated Talk
Saturday 24 March 2012, 11am – 12.30pm, £10
Bristol-based James Russell is an acknowledged authority on the life and work of
English water colourist and designer Eric Ravilious, having written widely and given
illustrated talks on the artist's life and work to audiences across the UK.
Bringing the exhibition and the artist alive, James Russell presents Ravilious’s life in
pictures, as well as giving an insight into the research he conducted for the latest in
his ‘Ravilious in Pictures’ book: A Travelling Artist.
Live Performance readings
Saturday 24 March 11am and 2pm, free but pre-booking advisable (normal
exhibition entry prices apply)
Join Dr Anna Farthing of Harvest Heritage Arts and Media for some lively
performance readings. In the morning, share your favourite Puffin children’s stories
with the next generation. In the afternoon, hear extracts from Penguin thrillers,
drama, poetry, cookery ... and maybe even a snippet of ‘that book’.
Contemporary Cut: Kerry Day MA
Sunday 25 March, 10am – 4pm, £70
A chance to look at Lino print in a different way. Explore shape, tone and texture
to produce a series of prints or one off creations.

Hands-on food and cooking taster session for children 6-14 years and their parents
or carers. Make a simple tasty lunch with fresh ingredients.
Children’s ‘make and take’ activities – drop in session

Bring the family to get stuck in to making a range of Penguin and Puffin inspired
items.
Screen Print Family Workshop (5+ years): Simon Tozer MA
Wednesday 11 April, 10am – 1pm, £10
Try your hand at screen printing, a simple technique that uses stencils to produce
vibrantly coloured and crisp images. We will experiment with the process using a
combination of hand cut paper stencils, and a monoprint technique using
watersoluble pencils. Participants will each make several pictures, which can be put
together to make a simple book at the end of the session.
Easy Linocut Family Workshop (12-16 years): Christine Howes MA
Thursday 12 April, 10am – 12.30pm, £10
Christine will take you around the Peter Reddick and Ravilious exhibitions for
inspiration. You choose a work to respond to, or work with your own image to
create colourful prints using soft-cut lino. Print your own cards and wrapping paper
using exciting materials to create colourful images. Great fun!
Print with Anything Family Workshop (8-11 years): Maria Bowers MA
Friday 13 April, 10am – 12pm, £10
Basic ‘print with anything’ course. Have fun printing without a press, using
household objects and water-based, washable ink to make prints on paper. For
example, use potatoes, sponges, spoons, pastry cutters, Lego, corks, bottle tops,
fabric/lace, leaves, and plenty of imagination.
Paper Dolls workshop
Saturday 14 April, 10am-12 noon
Book in advance, usual admission applies (£5 adults, FREE accompanied under 16s)
Design a doll-size wardrobe with this creative collage and colouring workshop for
children aged 4-8 years. We provide everything needed to create a miniature world
of fashion in 2 dimensions - you just bring your junior Armani.

About the RWA
The RWA has six galleries within the 19th century building. The five upstairs
galleries – Sharples, Winterstoke, Stancomb-Wills, Methuen, and Milner - host the
main exhibition/s. Artists can apply to hire the downstairs Fedden Gallery. All gallery
spaces are available for private hire for special events, such as weddings and parties,

The Royal West of England Academy (RWA) is one of only five Royal academies of
art in the UK. It is a registered charity which has been self-supporting for over 150
years and possesses an outstanding Grade II* listed building, galleries and
permanent fine art collection. The RWA has HM Queen Elizabeth II as its patron
and HRH The Prince of Wales is an honorary academician.
The RWA is an established venue for the fine arts and embraces an artistic
awareness of the widest nature. The exhibition programme provides a showcase
for one-person and mixed exhibitions in a variety of media, which attract large
