MEDIA RELEASE
For Immediate Release
Antlers Gallery Bristol, launch an emerging scene of contemporary skill-based artists in London
From 19 – 31 March Antlers present ‘Other Nature’ at Frameless Gallery, 20 Clerkenwell Green, Islington.
Antlers Gallery is one of the most recent and intriguing editions to Bristol’s art scene. Launched in 2010 they
represent an emerging group of artists who bring contemporary interpretations to traditional methods and
subjects. Central to all the artist’s work are skill-based practices, good draughtsmanship with a particular
focus on drawing and painting. Works with strong narrative elements, pieces that evoke a sense of the
uncanny and references to the natural world also unify the artists. For the first time this rapidly developing
Bristol scene will be on show in London, with the Antlers curated show – ‘Other Nature’.
‘Other Nature’ brings contemporary interpretations to traditional genres through re-examining and
manipulating the ideas of Natural History, Landscape and Narrative painting. The works have all been
produced in the urban environment and create a tension between the natural and the man-made. Within
many of the works animal and natural forms are positioned as the ‘other’ in turn redefining the human
position. The otherness of nature juxtaposed with the human familiarity creates an un-easy, uncanny or
otherworldly aesthetic.
Some highlights in the exhibition include the graphite drawings of Ellie Coates. In the piece ‘Deadly
Nightshade’ she depicts in her precise and immensely detailed process two bees chained to a branch. The
bees’ wings have been carefully cut and lifted from the page, framed in box frames the final pieces make a
strong reference to Victorian or lepidopterist’s collections. Ideas of entrapment and the close relationship
between the animal and human are important themes throughout Coates’ practice. In contrast to these small
and delicate works, we are presented with Amy Timm’s large-scale gouache painting of a fox’s corpse –
‘Foxfire’. The use of colour and precision of stroke show Timm’s as a remarkable painter. Each fungi and
insect feeding from the fox has been thoroughly researched to match the climate and habitat of the corpse.
The different species are mathematically measured and proportioned; Timm’s accurate approach is
unquestionable.
At a time when traditional techniques of drawing and painting are once again rising to prominence in the
contemporary arts, this exhibition offers an insightful take on these popular mediums. For this group of
artists, their draughtsmanship attention to detail and accuracy are all used as tools to express their wider
ideas and contemporary outlooks on the natural environment. This showcase exhibition reveals at an exciting
point a group of artists who although work independently, share some key inspirations and common points of
reference. Some really astounding work by a talented group of artists – a show not to be missed.
