Elfyn Lewis – Arianrhod
This Autumn Oriel Ynys Môn, Llangefni will showcase the latest work of the highly regarded, multi
award winning, contemporary artist Elfyn Lewis.
Elfyn Lewis grew up in Porthmadog, and gained a BA from the University of Central Lancashire,
Preston, and an MA in fine Art from University of Wales Institute, Cardiff – where he now lives.
Inspired by his love of both the Welsh landscape and ancient place names, his abstract paintings use
thick smears of paint, pushed and dragged across the surface with various brushes and trowels,
layered on and left, in some cases, to drip over the edge of the board to create an almost sculptural
textured painting.
“Surfaces are layered with paint that overflows, dripping, congested, thick impasto paint has been
pushed and forced to create a painting, which is also an object of desire.” Said Elfyn Lewis, he added,
“These paintings are layered time and time again until the upper layer explodes and transforms from
its volcanic creation into a vivid landscape. These are eruptions of colour and beauty intended to
transfix the viewer.”
Elfyn Lewis’s work has been widely exhibited, including at London’s Royal Academy and he has won
many awards. He won The National Eisteddfod Gold Medal in 2009 and Welsh Artist of the Year
2010.
Nicola Gibson, Arts Officer for Anglesey County Council said: “It’s a pleasure, and privilege to
welcome an artist as well known, and highly regarded as Elfyn Lewis to Oriel Ynys Môn. The work on
display will be all new works, displayed in public for the very first time. We look forward to a
memorable exhibition.”
The exhibition, entitled Arianrhod, opens on Saturday 21 September and there will be an
opportunity to meet the artist between 12.00 and 2.00pm. The exhibition is on until Sunday 3
November. Oriel Ynys Môn is open daily between 10.30am and 5.00pm and admission is free. For

Elfyn Lewis – Arianrhod
Yr Hydref yma bydd Oriel Ynys Môn, Llangefni yn arddangos gwaith diweddaraf un o artistiaid
cyfoes mwyaf blaenllaw Cymru – Elfyn Lewis.
Magwyd Elfyn Lewis ym Mhorthmadog, a enillodd BA mewn celfyddyd gain o Brifysgol Preston, a
M.A. o Athrofa Prifysgol Cymru, Caerdydd - lle mae o bellach yn byw.
Wedi’i ysbrydoli gan ei gariad tuag at dirwedd ac enwau lleoedd Cymru, mae paentiadau haniaethol
Elfyn Lewis yn defnyddio paent trwchus wedi’i frwsio a’i drywelu ar hyd y wyneb - ei haenu ymlaen
a’i adael i ddiferu dros ymyl y gwaith i greu paentiad cerfluniol.
“Caiff haenau o baet acrylic ei gadael i orlifo a diferu ar draws arwyneb y cynfas. Caiff yr impasto
trwchus ei wthio a’i orfodi i greu paentiad, sydd hefyd yn wrthrych chwant”, Meddai Elfyn Lewis.
Ychwanegodd: “ Rhoddir haen ar ben haen ar y paentiadau hyn nes bod yr haen uchaf yn ffrwydro,
gan drawsnewid eu creadigaeth folcanaidd yn dirlun lliwgar. Echdoriadau o liw a harddwch yw’r
rhain, a’u bwriad yw hoelio sylw'r gwyliwr.”
Mae gwaith Elfyn Lewis wedi cael ei arddangos yn eang, gan gynnwys Yr Academi Frenhinol yn
Llundain. Mae wedi ennill gwobrwyon yn cynnwys medal aur Yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol yn 2009 ac
Artist Y Flwyddyn 2010.
“Pleser ac anrhydedd ydi croesawu artist mor adnabyddus ag Elfyn Lewis I Oriel Ynys Môn. Bydd y
gwaith sy’n cael ei arddangos yn waith newydd sbon - i’w weld am y tro cyntaf yn gyhoeddus.
Edrychwn ymlaen am arddangosfa gofiadwy,” meddai Nicola Gibson - Swyddog Celf Cyngor Sir Ynys
Môn.
