PRESS RELEASE
David L Carpanini - New Work. 10 - 31 May 2014
This exhibition, his first for three years, features not only new paintings and drawings but a
significant series of new etchings. While the South Wales valleys predominate as a subject, this
exhibition also sees him branching out into a new arena - a series of paintings of the Tuscan
landscape and its people.
David Carpanini is one of Wales’ most well-known and respected artists. He was born in the Afan
Valley in Glamorgan in 1946 and trained at Gloucestershire College of Art and Design, Cheltenham;
the Royal College of Art; and the University of Reading.
Most of his adult life has been spent in England but his paintings, drawings and etchings are almost
entirely devoted to the presentation of the valleys and former mining communities of South Wales
where he was brought up. Lonely figures, scarred landscapes, perching terraces of houses are the
images to which he is faithful and to which he attributes the development of his creative
imagination.
Although solidly representational, his pictures speak eloquently of abstracts – fear, isolation, and
survival. The titles of his works often have a strong poetic resonance and hint at more personal
motivations underlying the characters depicted and his own ideas of creativity and intent.
David Carpanini is a member of many prestigious groups and he was the first Welsh President of the
Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (RE). For many years his work has been included in the Royal
Academy Annual Summer exhibition and he has shown in many group and solo exhibitions in the UK
and abroad.
This exhibition, three years in the preparation, features not only new paintings and drawings but a
significant series of new etchings. While the South Wales valleys predominate, this exhibition also
sees him branching out into a new arena - a series of paintings of the Tuscan landscape and it
follows a major retrospective exhibition of his work at Leamington Spa Art Gallery and Museum in
2014.
