Cultivation & Creativity
5 – 16 November 2014
Private View: Thursday 6 November, 6 – 8pm
Bankside Gallery is delighted to present Cultivation & Creativity which showcases works featuring the four Royal
Horticultural Society gardens as seen by Royal Watercolour Society artists. The RWS was founded in 1804, and like
the RHS, celebrates its 210th anniversary in 2014. Works will reflect the changing seasons and the life of the gardens,
and the exhibition will show an exciting and diverse range of responses, from the figurative to the abstract.
Every artist in this exhibition has a strong personal voice. They all work in many different water based media, and the
range of methods and materials used will intrigue and surprise. Participating artists will include Richard Bawden, son of
war artist Edward Bawden, June Berry, a celebrated watercolourist now in her 90th year, Liz Butler a highly accomplished
botanical artist, Francis Bowyer renowned teacher at the Royal Academy Schools, recently returned from recording life
at Camp Bastion in Afghanistan, and Sophie Knight elected to the RWS at only 24 years of age, who is best known for
her wet-on-wet watercolour paintings.
In addition, RWS artists will be exhibiting their paintings at The Glasshouse Gallery at RHS Wisley from 19 – 30
November 2014 and will display a selection of their works in the RHS Great London Plant Fair on 14 – 15 April 2015 at
the Royal Horticultural Halls in London.
