Oriel Ynys Môn is proud to be launching the third ‘Kyffin Williams Drawing Prize’ Exhibition on

Friday, the 11th of September, 2015. The Drawing Prize was established by the Sir Kyffin Williams

Trust as a tribute to the support that he gave to artists and the value he placed on drawing skills

throughout his career as Wales’s most prolific and best loved artist.

The Drawing Competition is held every three years with an impressive prize of £3,000 presented to

the winner sponsored by The Gaynor Cemlyn Jones Trust. Since the Drawing Prize’s conception in

2009 the number of artists applying has increased considerably, with candidates entering from all

over the country as well as from abroad.

This year’s Judges were artists: - Wil Rowlands, Louise Payne and Ann Lewis, with Dr Paul Joyner

from the National Library of Wales, and the whole process was chaired by Derec Llwyd Morgan.

On choosing this year’s winner the Judges stated.

Selecting the competition was most enjoyable, particularly as all five of us brought something

different to the process. The range of entries was very diverse and the general standard was very

high…… Although half a dozen drawings came to the top, our choice of winner was unanimous

and totally justified. There was a thoroughness and diligence about the drawings. I liked the

warmth and intimacy in the work, probably resulting from the artist’s close association with the

sitters.

“This is an artist of substance, who is truly passionate about her subjects and medium……. To

create a series of drawings on the subject of old age without any feelings of sadness is wonderful

and shows a celebration about people as people not about what they have achieved”

To find out who that winner is and to vote for your favourite, you can visit the Kyffin Williams

Drawing Prize Exhibition free of charge at Oriel Ynys Môn, between the 12th of September, 2015
