A Dancer’s View: Light and Shadow by Andre Uspenski
In his inaugural exhibition of fine art photography at the Old Truman Brewery on 27th April
2017, Andre Uspenki combines a photographer’s eye with a dancer’s understanding of
movement to explore light and shadow through the dynamics of the human form.
Russian photographer Andre Uspenski is a former First Artist of The Royal Ballet. He joined
the Company in 2002, was promoted to First Artist in 2004, and since being forced to retire
as a dancer in 2015 due to injury, regularly photographs rehearsals and performances for
the Company. He continues to work with premier dancers and choreographers worldwide.
He has published the photography books Dancers: Behind the Scenes with The Royal
Ballet (2013), Natalia Osipova: Becoming a Swan (2013) and Steven McRae: Dancer in the
Fast Lane (2014).
Uspenski was born in St Petersburg and trained at the Vaganova Ballet Academy, the
Palucca School, Dresden, and the Berlin State Ballet School. He graduated into Royal Danish
Ballet in 1999, joining The Royal Ballet in 2002.
