Press Release
Turf gallery is pleased to announce the opening of ‘Aspects of Landscape’, paintings and drawings by Jane Percival. Jane Percival began her training at Chelsea School of Art and later studied her masters in painting at the Royal College of Art.
Artist’s statement:
These paintings are mostly based on working drawings aided by memory. In trying to convey something of what I have experienced beyond the literal, I constantly explore qualities of space light and colour in terms of paint. I work until a point is reached where a painting seems to have it s own momentum.
In response to Percival’s landscapes Sue Hubbard wrote:
‘Colour constitutes the dominant language of Jane Percival's lyrical landscapes and provides a vocabulary in which subtle states of mood, time and place can, not so much be described, as translated.
Whether in the soft grey light of Somerset where local colour is retained or in the hot sun of France or Greece where it is either bleached or intensified, what is left is a synthesis of observation and emotion, a dialogue between the initial vision and the transformative act of painting’.
Sue Hubbard writes regularly on art for The Independent and New Statesman.
