‘Stone/Sail/Wave/Ripple’: New work by Adam Aaronson Exhibition at ZeST Contemporary Glass Gallery March 15 – April 25, 2007
ZeST, London’s top destination for contemporary glass art, is delighted to announce a new exhibition of work by British glass artist Adam Aaronson. In the sculptural forms of ‘Stone/Sail/Wave/Ripple’, Adam explores and develops a recurring theme in his work: the inherent tension between square and rectangular shapes in a medium embodied by the natural circles and curves that are the essence of the molten glass state.
Taking his inspiration from shapes in the natural world, Adam uses free blowing techniques to capture in a static vessel the fluid-like elements found in the movement and sensuality of liquid glass. “This idea is expressed subliminally, in a vocabulary of forms that is completely contrary to most conventional blown glass, where the most usual shapes are round or oval,” Adam says.
The varying forms work well as solo objects, but take on a new dimension when displayed in pairs or groups. Some shapes are reminiscent of the continual, repetitive movement of waves in the sea. The juxtaposition of two Wave sculptures generates a new dynamic that interacts beautifully within itself. A cluster of Sail forms, like multiple boats in a storm, creates the idea of ripples in our minds and is extended in the form of the Ripple sculpture itself.
The outer surface of the sculptures is formed by a casing of clear, sandblasted glass, while the inner core is coloured glass – whether pale and ethereal, or deep and mysterious. This juxtaposition of a soft, blurred edge with the coloured interior, combined with the soft play of light through the piece, offers a playful and exciting perspective.
Adam’s work has been widely exhibited in the UK and abroad, including the National Design Museum in New York, Abovo, Munich, the National Glass Centre, Sunderland, Chelsea Crafts Fair, London, and Djanogly Art Centre, Nottingham. In November, his work will feature as part of ZeST’s show at SOFA Chicago, one of the top decorative arts fairs in the United States.
