Joanna Bailey says of her work: ‘It has taken me many years to strip away the layers to get to where I am now’.
Over the years ‘found’ and ‘collected’ objects have been a source of inspiration for Joanna. Starting with these points of reference, industrial and discarded objects and most recently the door have become more substantial elements within her work.
This collection of paintings started life just over a year ago. The work signifies the convergence of a number of themes which show Joanna combining the act of painting with her own distinctive markmaking – sometimes primitive sometimes playful. These paintings aren’t just about surface: the layers are built up, often they are excavated but always the history of the painting is sensuously laid before the viewer.
