The olfactory insta- llations of Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto are a notable exception and his exhibition ‘The Edges of the World’ (continuing until 5 Sept- ember) fills Hayward Gallery with a spectacular riot of multicoloured gauze, which floats, twists and stretches into columns, tunnels, pavilions and caverns that are periodically studded with pockets of fragrances such as lavender. It is a shimmering, ethereal dream, but not without a studious nod to Neto’s artistic forefathers: the biomorphic shapes recall Jean Arp and Joan Miró whilethefloat- ing ceilings, through which one may climb to pokeyour head abovetheclouds, evokethe modernisme architecture of Antoni Gaudí. Neto’s immersive install- ations strikea nimblebalance between weighty art history and theexuberanceof thefunfair. PB SARGENT AT SEA It is always good to discover an unfamiliar side to an artist we tho- ught we knew everything about but I am not entirely convinced that the rather grandly titled ‘Sargent and the Sea’ ( Royal Academy ) provides quite the de- gree of revelation this suggests.
