T REVOR F RANKLAND : Between Clarity and Mystery by Simon Fenwick This monograph on Trevor Frankland reproduces work from student days at the Royal Academy Schools in London to his election as a member of the London Group and other major exhibiting societies. Frankland was a visiting lecturer at Hornsey School of Art during the political ‘sit in’ of 1968 which had an unforeseen beneficial effect on his work, leading to his first one person show. His development of a domestic landscape involving illusion, which is entitled, ‘Summer River Bed Winter Flood Plain’, has been televised several times. Details of this excavated landscape and its present appearance are well described and illustrated in this book. It was however Frankland’s later use of watercolour as a creative medium that led to his election as a member of the Royal Watercolour Society and in 2003 he became its President and also was elected an Honorary Member of The Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. His interest in the occult and involvement in Freemasonry have much in common with that of many artists working in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, reinforcing his belief that composition and structure carry the soul of an art work. The author’s intriguing text together with over 120 illustrations shows how Frankland’s involvement in art governs every aspect of his life. The book is prefaced with an appreciation by Leonard McComb RA.
