Mon–Sat 9.30–5, Sun 10.30–4 gallery@tresco.co.uk www.gallerytresco.co.uk t 01720 424925 Just past his 50th birthday, Adam Birtwistle has established an enviable reputation as one of the most powerful and controversial portraitists of his generation, with his reverse 'black as white' and 'white as black' portraits of such eminent figures as Martin Luther King and Albert Einstein, Malcolm X and Marilyn Monroe. This mid- career retrospective at the Atkinson Gallery which includes examples of these alongside new portraits of the three South African Peace Prize Laureates Mandela, Tutu and F.W. de Clerk – this time not reversed – shows Birtwistle as not so much a portraitist in the conventional sense, but rather as an artist who uses the portrait form as an ex- pressive 'end' to his strongly held beliefs about the nature of race relations and human integrity.
