Sep 18–Oct 30. Contemporary studio jewellery from The life and art of Sheila Fell, who died tragically early at the age of 48in 1979, are celebrated in a retrospective at Offer Waterman & Co (8to 29 October, see Map 21), and in a wonderfully illuminating illustrated biography, Sheila Fell: A Passion forPaint by Cate Haste, with an Introduction by Frank Auerbach (published by Lund Humphries at £35). Born into a poor Cumbrian mining family, described as a ‘vivacious, sophisticated, articulate’ person, Fell tenaciously pursued a life as a born painter, in Auerbach’s words, of ‘absolute authenticity’, against difficult odds. Having studied at Carlisle School of Art and St Martin’s in London, supported by L.S. Lowry’s understanding friendship, she went on to paint vibrantly impastoed pictures of visionary expressionist intensity, depicting the ominous mountainscapes, potato pickers (diminutive in radiant fields), and villages of her native terrain, of which, in her rather bohemian yet hard- working London life, she felt poignantly disinherited.
