Thosefrom theFirst are still perhaps rather the better known but now, with the opening of this year’s Stanley Spencer Gallery displays (Cookham High Street, (1 April to 15 January), there is a marvellous opportunity to see theastonishing Shipbuilding on the Clyde series he produced in theearly 1940s – somefivelong panels and one upright plus 32 of the drawings used in their making. Recently cleaned, these long, narrow, horizontal panels provide the perfect compositional foil for the cramped working conditions he so brilliantly observed. NU
