This is a genuine injustice for he is a painter of quite remarkable technical gifts, able seemingly to paint anything and, while this might have been part of the problem in the past, as this latest show ( Jonathan Cooper) makes very clear, Gales really does seem to have found his ‘voice’ here – strong tonal contrasts, rich colour, subtle shifts of focus make for some compelling images.
