GALLERIES JULY 11 An artist intrigued by the interactions of history, biology, ecology and cultural imperialism, Clair Chinnery’s latest exhibition, ‘Cuculus Prospectus‘ at Beldam, uses a most apposite metaphor to explore colonialism and environmental change – the Cuckoo (or Cuculus Canonorus ). Taking an early prospectus (1590) for settlers to North Carolina which describes the natural history of thearea, Chinnery constructs the most subtle and perceptive series of analogies between the cuckoo’s complex parasitism and human impacts on nature.
