Raised in the Manchester area he received encouragement to paint by LS Lowry, the legendary painter, who visited Stafford’s mother’s green-grocery shop in Hyde. To commemorate those early days, Stafford’s boyhood museum, the Central Art Gallery, Ashton-under- Lyne, will be exhibiting a collection of his work at the same time as our London exhibition. Mon–Fri 10–6, Sat 10.30–5.30 Sun 11–5 enquiries@thompsonsgallery.co.uk www.thompsonsgallery.co.uk t 020 7935 3595 Trained as a painter at the Slade in the 50s, David Heathcote spent much of his early career teaching in Zimbabwe and Nigeria before returning to his native Kent in the late 70s and then establishing Sculpture at Canterbury Christ Church University. This exhibi- tion ‘Beyond Horizons’, ( GV Art ), covers painting, sculpture and drawing from more or less the whole of this adventurous 60 year career, though it is the startling, brilliantly coloured and intensely painterly, landscape-imbued ab- stracts of the last 5-10 which per- haps best give the flavour of this thoughtful, experimental artist.
