De Staël and, behind him, Braque were his heroes and nothing really changed except artistic fashion which, when it soon after moved on to America, left him quietly to pursue his devotion to singing colour and expressive mark. This handsome studio studies show ( Bohun ) reveals the painter in reflective mood, the work full of a wonderful sense of the weight and heft of the visual world – most beautifully exemplified, for instance, in Rescue Launch ’s heaving, seething water!
