The petrified creatures and plants his glass jars and panels display, though based on close drawing and observation, are works of pure fiction, their three- dimensionality created simply by the magnification of the glass and the artist’s astounding technical skill at blowing, casting, grinding. Finding the colours he wants with metal oxides, silver and gold, the chance chemical reactions this can involve are akin to alchemy – and just as mysterious and intriguing.
