Significantly too, she finds the subjects of all the paintings in her new show, entitled 'This Green Voice’ ( Kestle Barton , near Helston, map 9), within 2 or 3 miles distance of her home on the Lizard. The close, daily attention she is thereby able to give them, allows for a marvellously informed and Louise McClary is, without question, one of the most thoughtful and poetic of the mid- generation of landscape painters working in the Cornish landscape. Whereas so many look up and over at wind-blown, sensitive response to the changing seasonal energies of the place. And, as she observes of herself, this intensive process of walking, drawing, writing and painting “serves to get the subject inside of me . . . into my bones”, a process of looking that reminds me vividly of the great 19th C. Scottish/American naturalist John Muir's comment that he found by going out all day he was, in fact, really going in. Above all it gives to the work, with its dense, complex intertwinings of natural forms and richly coloured interior depths, a sense of quietude that is only rarely found in contemporary landscape painting.
