Jun 19–Aug 17. Including paintings by Crawfurd Adamson, MAP 18 ENGLAND THAMES VALLEY, BUCKS & HERTS Graham Dean ‘Large Long Jump’ on Graham Dean's part therefore to take up a suggestion from Victoria Art Gallery 's director Jon Benington to paint a show inspired by the Olympics. But, given the fact that Dean has been painting the human body for the last 30 years with considerable critical success, it had a certain logic to it and has resulted in two interesting and unpredictable shows (at Victoria Art Gallery, Bath, through August and at Waterhouse & Dodd in Cork Street to 12 August). As Dean explains in his catalogue It might be a bad moment to say it but there aren't many contemporary, or even 20th C., artists that have tackled sporting themes with any notable degree of success. It took some courage interview, he followed his painter's instinct to look in the opposite direction to the press photographers and approach his athletic subjects in the quieter reflective or preparatory moments of their professional lives, giving us often moving and thought-provoking insights into what is involved, physically and mentally for them. It is in short a proper celebration of the human body's astonishing ability to adapt and mould itself to intense physical pressures with quiet grace and beauty. NU THUMB nails
