GALLERIES DECEMBER 12 Jason Walker ‘Teddy’ 2012 at Bucca Gallery visceral, sometimes shocking with a feminist agenda at its heart yet, somewhat paradoxically, it is strangely beautiful. In spite of an ambiguously lyrical lilt, ‘The Secret Worth A Thousand’ (a reference to Goethe’s belief in the importance of communing with nature) is unlikely to make compromises. [See image p6] The painters of the original Newlyn School were, in their own way, just as radical moving away from the academic towards everyday subject matter and a fresh naturalism. The very best place to see these paintings is the Penlee House Gallery and Museum in nearby Penzance, which has a fine permanent collection, while those looking to buy should check out the Newlyn School Gallery in Penzance’s Chapel Street. Pip Palmer arena for the prestigious Newlyn Society of Artists’ ‘Christmas Crackers’. Funded by philanthropist Passmore Edwards in 1895 for the benefit of both residents and artists, Newlyn Art Gallery’s remit has had a change of emphasis of late and has, like Tate St Ives , done much to bring international work to the region. In December however, the focus is very much a local one with a solo show of paintings and projected images by Kate Walters and a memorial exhibition of photographs by the sadly missed Jeremy Le Grice.
