GALLERIES JULY 12 MAP 17 ENGLAND THAMES VALLEY, BUCKS & HERTS motion, becoming, in the process, a valuable resource for architects, designers and private collectors. Their latest exhibition is typical, a first show in this country for the leading French and English-trained, American- based designer Paul Mathieu's internationally celebrated furnitureand lighting design project entitled 'Aria'. The long- term outcome of a commission to design liturgical furniture for 'La Madeleine', an 18th C. Baroquechurch in Aix-en- Provence in 2003, Mathieu continued to develop the design ideas within it for more secular purposes, to huge critical acclamation, his Aria chair, being dubbed 'Best in Year' in 2006. Thebronzefurniture collection shown here, for example, was inspired by the extraordinary bronze Bishop's Chair at La Madeleine, its elegant swirling form a cleverly stripped down take on the extravagance of the original Baroqueform. Thesamecan be seen in the new bench/table and standing Murano glass chandeliers also on show. A real coup for the gallery, in short, to beshowing this world- class designer. NU
