A passionate admirer of high quality modern art, Gerber wished to restore Glasgow to its former glory as a renowned centre within the British and international art worlds. To this end he set up the New Charing Cross Gallery in the early 1960s, then later the Compass Gallery and Gerber Fine Art – making West Regent Street a “must visit” art area of the City. Gerber’s enduring success as a gallery dealer was due to his deep love of the art and artists who he keenly supported, combined with his evangelical desire to share that love with others – whether passing gallery visitors or serious collectors. Cyril Gerber and his galleries have played a vital role in making Glasgow a vibrant art scene again, and we are thankful that his daughter, Jill, has been continuing her father’s important legacy.
