Sep 8–Oct 6. This Place: St Just in Penwith represents the recent results of a very long meditation on the business of belonging – and what its creator calls “an environmentally informed response to the politics of now”. It runs into the depths of individual identity, family and community and out over the topography of intimate landscapes where familiarity has bred not contempt but contentment – joy in the glory of the down-to-earth and everyday: happiness in home. Tricia Gillman: Fictive Models. Oct 13–Nov 3. A chance to see Gillman’s Colourist Expressionist, bold, Nick Hedderly ‘Buxton Opera House’ Over the last decade or so Nick Hedderly has become one of the most successful artists working in the East Midlands, winning open art exhibitions in Nottingham and Derby with his atmospherically charged and intensely painterly cityscapes and this solo show at the enterprising Tarpey Gallery in nearby Castle Donington makes it very clear that the reputation is in no way undeserved. For these are quiet, thoughtful works, full of an understanding of the way buildings and cityscapes become, as he himself puts it, “a repository of so many of our feelings and memories.” (For details see map 8) NU THUMB nails
