Not in any way portraits, these substantial pieces, some up to a metre square, use a wide variety of intensely expressive layerings of mixed media techniques to explore a whole gamut of human sensations, from the frail and insecure to the fierce and intense – to powerful cumulative effect. ”Through this process,” he writes, “I hope to restore an emotional response that mirrors the genuine sensation when two pairs of eyes unite” – a good description of the way these remarkable paintings work on you.
