British dealers I know. By off-beat, I mean that you can never quite predict what you are going to find. Take the current show – what he terms, with everything under £4,000, more affordable pricing – where, alongside some of the ‘usual suspects’, you find some fine groups of work by artists of whom you have never heard, or, at the very least, rarely see elsewhere, if at all. For example Jean Gibson, a lovely and unusual sculptor (wife of Tony Whishaw) who died sadly young – two terrific sculptures and a horse drawing of great vitality. Better known nowadays, Geoffrey Clarke’s are superb value and the Paolozzi maquettes too. NU THUMB nails
