Margate may have all the ‘buzz’ associated with Turner Contemporary but the real test is whether somewhere like this can genuinely stir wider contemporary activity in the North Kent region and, in those terms, Ramsgate, with this splendid new commercial space, the Updown Gallery, would seem to have stolen something of a march on its old rival. Opened 9 months ago, in a handsome early Victorian villa close to the harbour, by Kate Smith, a returnee to the area after a decade in the London and New York art scenes, the policy, as exemplified by their current show, a ten-year retrospective of the well-regarded sculptor/installation artist Piers Secunda, is unquestionably extremely progressive and adventurous.
