GALLERIES JULY 13 Marc Chagall ‘Le Coq Violet’ and ‘L'Homme Rouge a la Casquette’ retrospective this summer/ autumn, it represents a very viable alternative. For example, one of the stars of the show, Russian Village of 1925, with its evocative, kaleidoscopic depiction of his memories of his home town of Vitebsk, is worth the journey alone while the later, more familiarly “Romantic” Chagalls possess a vitality and energy that, understandably enough, sometimes went missing in old age. In short, for an Italian-owned gallery that has hitherto specialised in Italian 20th C. masters this is an intriguing and substantial branching out – what’s next on their agenda I wonder?
