Map 16 John Rowlands, ‘The Archer’ from the Station to Station Tour, photograph, 1976 from ‘David Bowie is’ at the V&A Museum George Bellows, ‘Men of the Docks’, 1912 oil on canvas, 114.3 x 161.3 cm (Randolph College, Lynchburg) at the Royal Academy ‘But he thinks he’d blow our minds’ And he might, all over again in ‘David Bowie is’ – a retrospective of the now reclusive rock icon at the Victoria & Albert Museum (23 March to 28 July). Even for contemporary fashionistas, musicians, photographers and designers, Bowie’s stratospheric existence and far reaching influence – from his beginning in the 60’s, metamorphosing through the next four decades and still flickering on – is deeply embedded in our neoteric cultural history. His influence and that of his fellow creatives is explored in this first international show – the famous clothes, album covers, photographs as well as more personal items – hand written lyrics and sketches – are all combined to explore how he has and still inspires. ‘I’m an instant star. Just add water and stir’ he said – hopefully the show will do just that . . . CM Modern American Life Though he died of appendicitis in 1926 aged just 42, American realist painter George Bellows left 600 oils, hundreds of drawings, dozens of prints and a significant reputation. His first UK retrospective opens at the Royal Academy on March 16 – though Londoners may recall his prominent role in a small exhibition at the National Gallery (‘An American Experiment: George Bellows and the Ashcan Painters’) in 2011. The RA show has 70 works from 1905 to 1925, spanning his gritty urban landscapes, family portraits, sporting pictures and Hudson River views. Early 20th century figurative painting at its most dynamic. AA PUBLIC galleries
