Painting finally won and in 1981 he opened his own gallery in Dartmouth. He’s still there and the work, large drawings of iconic buildings, exe- cuted in gouache, pen and ink on paper, is of a quite astonish- ing technical quality while his love and passion for the subject means that what could so easily become dry and old fashioned, takes on the kind of vitality that makes you want to go back and look at buildings like, for exam- ple, the Royal Academy of Arts, with a fresh eye for their sheer, glorious detail.
