Also showing a selection Lee Kang-hyo ‘Conical Vases’ Goldmark (map 16) is by now well established as one of the leading galleries in the country for international contemporary ceramics, this latest exhibition of Lee Kang-hyo marking the first major UK show of a potter widely regarded as one of the finest Korean practitioners at work today, with examples in all the major museum collections in the UK and USA. Lee’s pieces are seen as uniting two ancient Korean traditions, Onggi pottery and Punch’ong decoration, both, when Lee discovered them, in danger of disappearing in the face of more Western sculptural forms. With their pale translucent and speckled glazes and powerful, simple shapes, there seems to be a real feeling of a return to nature here, a sense of landscape, one reflected in the intense physicality of their making.
