Mark Elliott Smith’s large abstract paintings have visual references with the contemporary urban scene, and reveal thoughts and ideas as playful but symbolic patterns of forms and shapes which hint at some kind of narrative beyond the conscious grasp. Becoming immersed in the circle of Lanyon, Frost, Hilton and Hayman, Phelan embarked on a career as a painter that took him from Cornwall to Edinburgh and finally to London where he still paints prolifically. This show, at Messum’s (map 25), of work from 2001 onwards, reveals a bold geometry and strong, simple colour, the underlying focus of which is the structural logic of the human body and its relationship to space.
