In ‘Green Earth’ at Long and Ryle (map 21, until 19 December), trees’ redemptive resilience against relentless elements, is sensitively studied and celebrated. Landscape with Oaks is ambitious in scale to encompass broad canopies perceived as both grounded and diaphonously dynamic. Entwined (sanguine and morellone with oak gall ink on paper) depicts the urgent creaturely embrace of an oak and holly tree. Other paintings explore the human form in nature, gracefully solitary on a hillside or as a naked visionary presence surging amid sparkling dark skies or waters. Philip Vann
