28 GALLERIES FEBRUARY 2014 art CHELSEA channel your inner artist at chelsea’s show-stopping galleries American and European photographers’ work making this place always well worth a visit – Sarah Moon’s ‘About Colour’ opens on Feb 20. Pressingon down to the World’s End stretch of the King’s Road, there is a growing concentration of galleries in and around the Park Walk and Langton Street turnoffs. Tanya Baxter Contemporary has been here a while now, with her distinctive mix of the work of established Indian, Chinese and British 20th Century and Contemporary artists always worth catching, while just round the corner, in Park Walk, Cricket Fine Art is an excellent new-ish arrival with its changing, mixed shows of promisingyounger British painters, sculptors and printmakers making considerable appeal to new collectors in this boomingarea. Then, well-established in Langton Street, Offer Waterman , So, startingfrom there, right at the top of the King’s Road, let’s look more closely at some of the key galleries, both older established and more recently arrived that are, between them, contributingto what we might now call the Chelsea Renaissance. Michael Hoppen , just off Sloane Square is by now one of the more established venues in the district, his high end stock of classic 19/20th Century historical photography mixed with always interesting solo shows of contemporary Chelsea has longbeen synonymous with art, fashion and food. From the New King's Road to Sloane Square, art galleries, studios and clubs still proliferate in this ever experimental and forward lookingarea. Galleries have survived and grown through recessions and there is another renaissance right now. After periods of fluctuatingfortunes, the last decade or so has seen a quite marked upturn in gallery openings over an encouragingly broad spectrum of artistic interests. What happened? Chelsea had the good fortune to attract the hugely successful Saatchi Gallery complex in the Old Duke of York's Headquarters (currently showingemerging British artists) which, since its openingin 2008, has acted as a highly significant magnet, drawing in a new, youngarts crowd to the area...
