It’s a boldchoice; Monks’ huge canvases with their wide range of painterly processes can often seem to embody metaphorical histories in the large 18/19th C. interiors that form one of the principal subject matters of his current paintings. Yet, here within contemporary interiors, largely devoid of any historical sense in themselves, Monks’ paintings take on another quality again, a somehow melancholic and intensely poetic reflection on the passing of the oldand, by implication, a reminder to the modern that it too, one day, will also have a history . . .
