He studied painting at the Barman School of Art and Crafts, settling in Germany but travelling and working across Europe before returning, where during the 1932 national elections, he and other artistic friends and intellectuals agitated against the National Socialists. After 1933 under Hitler’s new regime Adler, a Jew, faced growing persecution and with two of his paintings displayed at the Mannheimer Arts Centre as examples of ‘degenerate art’ he fled to Paris. By 1937 his work was being seized from public collections and condemned by the Nazis. In 1939 he volunteered for the Polish army, the remnants of which had been established in France, but was discharged in 1940 and went to live for a short time in Scotland, moving to London in 1943. He died in 1949 the only survivor –his nine siblings all victims of the Holocaust.
