Using fabric, stitch, tapestry and collage within and under her paintings, Kuipers creates a rich three-dimensional and highly textured surface under or within her painting. That in itself is a complex process in which the cutting into, scratching, tearing and stitching together again become metaphors for the artist’s (and our own) mental states and sense of identity and place, and an environment for both artist and viewer to dwell in – hence the title of the show: ‘Dwellings’.
