A Survey of Comparative Assets by Melanie Gerlis. 192pp, Lund Humphries hbk, £30 A widely researched and clearly written analysis by the Art Market Editor of The Art Newspaper. Melanie Gerlis examines art as an investment class in comparison to other assets such as public equities (stocks and shares), gold, wine, property, private equity and luxury goods. Not least of the difficulties in assessing whether art is a good investment (in the purely financial sense) is the general paucity of hard information. Only around half of the market’s transactions – through an estimated 23,000 auction houses – are a matter of public record; those of some third of a million art dealers are not. So, what does the author conclude? A hint lies in the book title’s question mark . . . AA BOOK reviews
