Solo exhibition of New Works by Rosemary Clunie, some primeval quality, of the need to find some equivalence between it and her remembered experience of it, show her to be a powerful new voice in the art of the region. Key to her work of the last ten years or so has been her decision to focus on one, quite small, stretch of the North Compared by one critic to Strindberg in the tantalising poise between figuration and abstraction as he sought to “imitate nature’s way of creating”, Hannah Woodman’s paintings of the Cornish landscape, with their fierce mark- making evidence of a search for Cornish coast between St Agnes and Gwythian. Her remote studio there embeds her well within the landscape, the paintings becoming more a record of her felt responses to it than any kind of topographical account and they are all the better for it.
