Born in New York in 1922, Crotto fell in love with the idea of painting while serving as a G.I. in China. Using the G.I. Bill to then go and study art in Paris at the Leger Atelier in the late 1940s, Crotto proceeded to set up his studio there and live the life, also becoming a regular at Robert Graves’ Mallorcan community at Deya each summer. Aged 94 and still going strong, this show at Webbs Fine Art (map 18), entitled ‘After Matisse’ is from an innovative series of Seriographiques he produced in the early 1960s, their singing colour and bold simplifications the very spirit of post-war Paris.
