Like Cate Haste – the author of this beautiful monograph – I too met Craigie Aitchison briefly towards the end ofhis colourful career, when I curated an extremely popular show ofhis work for Edinburgh University in 2010. It was a rare privilege to be in the company ofa much admired artist whose life and art were a seamless continuation of each other. Haste very much captures this in her fascinating biography as we get a close insight into the life and career of the artist from interviews, family archives and personal letters much ofwhich has been made available for the first time. An insightful text accompanied by a rich array ofsuperb illustrations gives a full and rounded presentation ofone ofBritain’s most singular modern painters. Bill Hare BOOK reviews
