From fashion illustration student at Ipswich School of Art in the 1930s to special operations wireless operator in war time Vichy France, Stonehouse was arrested, tortured, sentenced to death – but survived, drawing portraits of concentration camp guards to order. After the war he was made an MBE. His career as artist and fashion illustrator took off when he moved to the US, working for American Vogue for 10 years as well as completing commissions from clients such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Elizabeth Arden. He also produced stylish portraits of American society and was renowned for capturing the glamorous, couture look of the time. He returned to England in 1979 to continue his work, including painting two portraits of the Queen Mother.
