Bomberg, Spencer, Bacon, Freud, Souza, Coldstream, Uglow are amongst the artists explored and beautifully illustrated here. Painters whom Bomberg taught – Auerbach, Kossoff – are discussed and well represented. It’s delightful to see two of Bomberg’s pupils, Dorothy Mead and Dennis Creffield, given their due. The more recent as well as contemporary ‘reclaiming of the figure by female artists’ (Rego, Saville, Paul, Brown, Yiadom-Boakye) makes a fascinating coda to the book. BOOK reviews
