Diverse views and morally complex, often ambiguous stances of such pacifist artists, are expertly and succinctly examined. First WW artists of this kind generally faced more ruthless official and public opposition and opprobrium. In the Second WW, it was quite common for such pacific painterly attitudes to be deeply conflicted themselves in the face of the enemy's clear totalitarian evil. Challenging masterpieces illustrated include Gertler's vertiginous ‘Merry- Go-Round’ (1916) and, as a poignant, potent Coda, William Crozier's harrowing 1962 portrayal of a skeletal soldier in a tin hat lying on the blood-soaked ground of Bourlon Wood.
