East Anglia is a very good case in point where John Kiki has long been one of the finest figurative painters based in a region rich with good artists but he has, remarkably, never been published before. Of Greek Cypriot origin, he trained at both the Camberwell School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools, finishing his studies in 1967. Kiki brings a distinctly Mediterranean sensibility to the human dramas of his teeming, colourful and intensely expressive canvases and this handsome and very substantial monograph, with a lively and well informed text by Keith Roberts (produced by the enterprising Norwich-based publisher/designer, Selwyn Taylor, and the latest in an ongoing series) really does them very timely justice.
